Growing up in what can be considered an American Birmingham had a profound effect on me...My backyard was the great city of Vernon, California, a proverbial, yet thriving wasteland that provides much of the commerce and labor force that moves L.A. and many other surrounding communities. I guess I turned out alright; smokestacks, slaughter houses, factories, warehouses, and litter as far as the eye can see make for great ambiance to raise a kid
