This is a pretty weird release focusing on looped drones and creepy sounds presented with an improvisational feeling. There is one part that sounds kind of like a gang of scary cats and railroad sounds. The first track takes over an entire side ("Side S," the other one is "Side M") and contains some pretty interesting sounds. There is a very controlled feel to the noise that is kind of like the classic Industrial (like TG) feel, but with loops and more modern equipment. There is a part of this side-long track that I would like to have titled "Garlic Frogs." Overall, this track just switches from one set of weird and creepy sounds to another, ultimately having a very unorganized feel to it. There are a lot of really cool sounds that occur, although it is amongst somewhat of a lack of direction, and are generally eclipsed by a less enjoyable sound that comes next. This definitely falls into the catagory of experimental music.
"Banana Horse Hammock" is a very silly song title with an even sillier introduction. It is a harmonica performance followed by a sort of power electronics track with a voice shouting very quickly in an obscure manner. The power electronics sound is very harsh and authentic, but the vocals are ultimately nonsensical. The wall of noise that erupts afterwards is very enjoyable, and this project is much more powerful when it focuses on the harsh and abrasive noise rather than the more musical loops. The title "The Horsemaster's Daughter" makes me think of the D.H. Lawrence's short story title "The Horse Dealer's Daughter." This is a really funny story where a woman falls into the mud an a man pulls her out of it. One time D. H. Lawrence wrote a review of a book written by a black man and said that even though it was a really good book, that it was still just a "nigger book." Now, that's not very nice of Mr. Lawrence now, is it?
There is some cool noise on here, but ultimately there is not a lot of substance or new ideas, and overall I am not getting very much personality of anything in particular going on here. This would probably be really enjoyable live, where all of the sounds would be pushed into the red, but on this recording everything sounds really controlled. There is a lot of potential here, and these guys have a lot of good sounds, but this release is not in and of itself particularly compelling.
