Screaming At A Wall

Artist: Josh Hydeman United States

Title: Screaming At A Wall

Label: Destructive Industries United States

Genre: Power Electronics/Noise

Track Listing:

01 Devoted To Failure
02 No Reason To Breathe
03 Mick At The Parade
04 The Last Man

This is a re-release of a cassette that originally came out on Myiasis Tapes. Josh Hydeman is the "silent partner" of Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck who still contributes to that group but is not always present at live performances. The music on here is one-man noise power electronics that definitely fits in with the sonic feel of that group, minus the overt focus on libertinage and prurience. You can definitely feel the intense sonic presence of this individual throughout the releases of that group. Very different from the work of Corephallism or Animal Steel (the other solo projects from members of TDSOGF) in the sense that this release retains the basic feel of a TDSOGF release with only a single individual providing the sound and vision.

In fact, this is very similar in composition to the also excellent and recently-reviewed TDSOGF 7" E.P. titled "Champagne And Biological Women." Each side opens with a short harsh blast that quickly gives way to a wider-reaching second piece of music that contains a strong melodic presence. Whereas TDSOGF is more concerned with in-your-face sexuality, the Josh Hydeman solo work seems to be more contemplative and in the misanthropic and inward vein. "Devoted To Failure" opens with a harsh noise wall blast and strong declarative vocals sounding like the mummy of some fascist screaming in fury as Berlin suffers under Communist bomb raids. Total annihilation right out of the starting gate.

Complete dominance of sound is achieved, only to give way to bitter and depressive atmospheres on the astounding "No Reason To Breathe." Complete and utter abomination is contemplated in a moment that sounds like the wits end of a bitter struggle with life. There is so much pain, why even go on? Just to contribute to someone else's pain? So futile. Rather just die and rot in some filthy gutter, some degenerated subway back alley. Eaten by cannibals and picked clean to the bone, the only thing that was left was dirty bones, some pants and a work shirt. Body full of shit and maggots gradually decays to bleached bones. "Mick At The Parade" is another harsh blast of filth-mongering harsh P.E. noise, complete cult-drenched sickness leading into the final workout of "The Last Man." This is the track that should be studied for the ages by P.E. and Industrial artists as a perfect example of how to construct a compelling noise rant that is worth the repeated listens that are necessary to figure out what is happening among the madness. Many thanks to Destructive Industries for re-releasing this amazing noise document. Great release, essential stuff. If you are a fan of power electronics with a strong vocal presence, you need this tape. Great showing from the USA.
