Unexploded

Artist: Unexploded Denmark

Title: Unexploded

Label: Self Released

Genre: Synth Rock

01 Unavoidable (Greed)
02 Bitchslapping A Crocodile (Gated)
03 Venom
04 Never Ever

Unexploded is the musical outlet of a Dane who calls himself Spine. His first full length album is scheduled for later this year. Through the years he released a few promo EP's, one of which is this one. It holds four tracks, clocking in together at 17 minutes. Opener is 'Unavoidable (Greed)', which reminded me of Funker Vogt in the beginning, mainly because of the lyrics and vocal. The comparison was quickly lost, because where Funker Vogt takes the music in an EBM direction, Unexploded ventures off to a synth rock style, utilizing many layers of music and combining rock and electro to create his own distinct style. 'Unavoidable' is a track about how peoples greed for more and more money will eventually cause another crisis.

'Bitchslapping A Crocodile (Gated)' is with its six minutes by far the longest track on this EP. It's a stretched out song, with a very mellow and relaxed atmosphere to it thanks to a very nice bass line. The title left me wondering what the hell this track is about exactly. 'Venom' is a very catchy track, and a welcome change after the previous track. 'Venom' is a bit more pop oriented, but it still sounds very well crafted. Last is 'Never Ever', which sounds a bit more aggressive than the rest of the EP.

Unexploded was a very pleasant surprise, and I hope for Spine that he can get his name out there. I think he'll be able to find a good audience. The only thing that left a little unsatisfied feeling within me was that the lyrics were mostly written in a AABB rhyming scheme. This scheme can make lyrics sound very quick as if they're forced in this scheme. They don't sound natural anymore, and can cause annoyance in the long run. At any rate, this EP was still very pleasant, with the strongest two tracks at the start. Looking forward to hearing more from this artist.
