Its strange how often a band who finds their start with a large label will come back later in their career to find their home there once more.  Back in 1998 Deranged were already veterans of the death metal scene, having put out their debut full-length “Rated X” on Repulse Records and a number of 7” EP's and Demos either through independent means or also on Repulse Records over their then 7 year career. That year, however, saw their first and what was to be their last release on Regain Records in “High on Blood” until 2008.  Between 2000 and 2006 Deranged found their home in Listenable Records, releasing four concrete full-lengths on Listenable and a well-received split 7” with American Punk-influenced Death Metallers Abcess..  Finally in 2008, Deranged returned to Regain Records for the release of The Redlight Murder Case.

The Redlight Murder Case is an album that features tracks that all tie in with one another, but which have all consistently been named after Giallo films/books.  Wikipedia defines Gialloa as “an Italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in Italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a broader meaning that is closer to the French fantastique genre, including elements of horror fiction and eroticism. The word giallo is Italian for "yellow" (see Wiktionary: giallo) and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback novels with trademark yellow covers.”  The titles include such well-known works of film and literature as Strip Nude for your Killer (1975 film by Andrea Bianchi) and Luciano Ercoli's classic 1971 film Death Walks on High Heels, though that one was co-produced as Spanish as well as the usual Italian.

As you could expect, the sound on The Redlight Murder Case is old school mixed with a certain amount of brutality / gore.  While it stays far away from its not-so-distant cousin in goregrind, there is a good amount of speed and complexity to be found in the music.  While the album does match a lot of what is coming out today on this side of death metal with skill and groove, something is definitely missing, be it passion or the ability to invent, and perhaps the band sensed this as well as both Guitar Johan Axelsson and drummer Rikkard Wermen left the band earlier this year, and the other two members decided to call it quits (though both have their own side-projects to turn to).  While The Redlight Murder Case is a great listen for those fixed on this style of death metal, for those interested in Deranged, you're better off turning to their earlier days, primarily their first release on Regain “High on Blood”.or their self-titled effort on Listenable from 2001.If looking at this album from a purely conceptual level, it does give an interesting glance and subtle nod to the Italian films that made half of us maniacs to begin with, or at least helped to influence our already tainted brains.
