Underjordiska is a one man ambient black metal project hailing from Sweden, a country that have spawned so many great acts of black metal that I don’t even know where to start. The man behind Underjordiska is Dawid Dahl located in Stockholm who is also active in the Swedish Thrash/Black Metal band Angrepp of what I have heard little to nothing. So another one man black metal project from Scandinavia, nowadays this seams to be an ongoing trend that started out with Burzum crafting weird ambience on his synthesizers before getting thrown into the Norwegian dungeon. Anyway, the album is a very neat locking package limited to 75 copies. The overall feeling of the album transmitting from the cover alone builds just the right atmosphere for the journey ahead, a journey of utter darkness and wicked shadows. The overall sound of the album consists of synthesizers combined with a gritty foreground of guitars and growling cries creating an atmosphere similar to Darkspace or Abruptum. However the overall sound is much harsher and the guitars constantly pulsate in a very enjoyable way creating a unique and delicate wall of cacophonic pleasure. The vocals, although hard to make out all the time enhances the instruments on a very interesting level blending in with the riffs in ways that really magnifies the experience. The lyrics would be nice to read but sadly the album offers no literature to go with the music, I guess it wouldn’t matter anyway since most of the songs are written in Swedish, one of the most evil of all languages.
The album starts of with Rainshine, a short but moody ambient drone that reminds me of the sound effect in movies when a slimy creature from beyond the stars are sneaking up upon an unsuspecting female victim. The second journey on the album is Ögonstjärna, a more purebred black metal hymn of sublime nature bringing up an appetite for the rest of the album. One thing I noticed quite early is that the guitar seams to be played in many layers creating both an underlying noise as well as the actual melody. Song number three is called Uppenbarelsen, the introduction to the song sounded exactly as gritty as black metal was meant to be. A bit into the song a weird extremely pitched sub tone enters bringing a variation as intriguing as a well told tale. The album continues to amaze me with song after song of extremely well crafted atmosphere and after a while this albums true pearl, Om Hösten clear me of any doubt. This is great ambient black metal best served raw. The songs are well performed and overall I really like this album. This album got exactly what I need in the form of pure unleashed black metal drenched in subterranean ambient of the blackest kind. Underjordiska is a band I would gladly recommend to anyone into black metal in the veins of Darkspace, Paysage D’Hiver and Vinterriket. Dystert Vilse is a journey through the blackest pits of the underworld, and I hope this beast get to see more of this great project in the near future.
[Editor Note: This album has been re-released as a digi-cdr in a limitation of 300 copies by New Age Dawn/Stellar Auditorium Productions in August 2008.]
