Obviously when one receives an album from a band called Hot Buttered Anal with an album cover that depicts a bag of buttered popcorn penises with a hundred little drawings of stick figures with balls, guns, and middle fingers astray, you'd probably be expecting some sort of humor-grind album coming your way. Ironically though, this one comes from another section of the punk-influences realm, crossover thrash. Though this label is misleading as the band takes on several other genres in random moments throughout the album. Humor is definitely the key to this release though as I challenge any one of you to get through this entire album without giggling like a schoolgirl over some of some Bob Cocks' one-liners.
“Gay cowboy robots need love too – so what if we shoot synthetic goo?”
Again, I stress that this is a punk-influenced album before metal. If you don't get into punk beats and clean aggressive vocals then this one isn't for you. Not even close. But if you're into hilarious and aggressive music of any nature you may find yourself loving this one. The most interesting and the entire reason this album is worth your money is the sheer versatility that Hot Buttered Anal show off throughout the album. This three-piece from Providence, Rhode Island isn't satisfied with just being an off the wall punk band. They have many moments of instrumentally and compositionally talented different styles that pop up randomly throughout the album.
I've got to admit that I'm surprised the band didn't go the DIY route with this self-financed release like most of their genre(s) do these days. Then again, given the very nature of this release one should be careful to make any kind of assumptions about the album or band. The artwork is incredibly professional and well-put together. Not only does the front cover proudly sport a Parental Advisory sticker, but the printing is top notch, with the back cover turned into a nutrition facts sheet for the popcorn with the track list for ingredients and track lengths as percentages. This is one to be experienced by fans of humorous music of the punk or metal realms.
