I do believe this is the only metal band that I have ever heard of coming out of Hawaii besides Marty Friedman's early 80's project "Hawaii" which had a short-lived career on Steamhammer. Oh, and the band with the most hilarious band picture EVER, Aaronsrod, which can be seen here: View Aaronsrod. I am really not quite so sure how serious Magnum Carnage is about their music given some of their photographs. I have thus far seen them in everything from luchadore masks to 80's hair and spandex. While they would probably still make Dee Snider weeps tears of joy, it's doing more to give me nightmares than impress me. Regardless, one of the band members has a Bathory shirt, which is more than enough for me to make an honorable mention to Dan. Way to go man. Now let's hope the music keeps pace with the image put forth...
I am actually....rather...impressed! While the bands current path of experimentation doesn't really fit my fancy personally, they do use samples in a very unique way, and successfully create a unique brand of blackened thrash. Lead vocalist Kai seems to be the main songwriter, as he also does guitar leads and keyboards in the music. Believe me, it's definitely impressive. Many of the leads aren't your typical black metal tremlo picks. This is old school shredding. The only real complaint I have about the band is their corny atmosphere at times. They could really be so talented as a serious band, and I feel that that may be what holds them back when it comes to being signed by a label. If they dropped the goofing off, a label like The End Records might actually be interested in them. The music at times really is incredibly powerful, like the verse to Come Die with us Pt. II. The Rhythm is furious and epic, but then they drown out into a Type O Negative-styled shouting Chorus. That brings back memories... "I Like Vitamins!"
Did I mention that this album was engineered by the devil himself? That's right. Satan mixed this album, being the genius that he is. Be sure to listen for the subliminal messages, kids! The only thing that is really truely missing from this is maybe some choir. There are a lot of open space parts filled with noise that they could easily use some choir samples in to fill the void. I'm sure a generic sympho-bm band is the last thing these guy are aiming to be, but musically it would be very fitting for them. Great album, definitely worth a purchase to any thrashy BM'ers out there. However, expect MUCH thrash to it. Labels, be on the look out for this band. They deserve some attention.
