Infinite Death

Artist: Death Unit United States

Title: Infinite Death

Label: Important Records United States

Genre: Noise / Experimental Rock

Two untitled tracks

The weather on the morning of the car accident had been perfect for driving. A clear and bone dry day. The car had just been through an exhaustive MOT and passed with flying colours. Why then my sister ended up upside down in a ditch was a complete mystery which has never been explained to this day. She was in a coma for nine long weeks. Kept alive by machinery breathing for her. We visited her every day. My mother took it very badly. She always was ma’s favourite child. We tried talking to her of course. Tried to get her to come round. We would sit for hours taking it in turns to waffle any old shit in the hope she would stir. Nothing. We even tried playing her music she loved in the vein and forlorn hope that this would help. I would sit by the bedside with tapes of Donny Osmond and the Bay City Rollers to no avail. Pure torture for me. Eventually they pulled the plug. Goodnight Vienna. Hello Afterlife. If only this release by Death Unit had been available at the time. She would have woken up for sure. Music to waken the dead. Ha! As it is I have only my memories of her to keep me company. God I hated that selfish self possessed obnoxious bitch. Nice tits and ass though. Had seen them enough times whilst spying on her. What a waste of quality fanny. Life goes on. Hey ho.

Death Unit are Chris Corsano (drums), Trevor Tremaine (drums), Brian Sullivan (guitar) and Carlos Corsano (electronics). Those of you in the know will, I suspect, be nodding your head at the recognition of these troubadours of sickness. Carve their names with pride. Hair Police and Mouthus. Oh yeah. ‘Infinite Death’ is their debut CD recording, although they have the vinyl only ‘Only Death Is Certain’ already out on the Hospital Productions label, and comprises one studio track and one track recorded during their summer 2005 tour. A total of 34+ minutes of aural free noise sculpting. Oh yeah…for a second time. With no vocalist to hinder them the group are given free reign to indulge themselves in a swirling mass of unrelenting and unrestrained headache inducing music. The twin drum attacks of Chris and Trevor letting rip with a gusto that would have John "Bonzo" Bonham tapping his toes in the celestial clouds. If he still has feet of course. Brian adding the feedback frenzies that put certain members of Sonic Youth to shame. And keeping the cacophony just this side of royally fucked are the electronic assaults of founding member Carlos himself. These 4 dudes of the apocalypse bring destruction of the senses to your door. There are no tunes to speak of. No rhythmic patterns to admire. Just NOISE. Incredible and chaotic NOISE. Pollution of the airways. Take away the drum assaults and this would easily fit into the extreme noise genre without a second glance. Crazy, crazy stuff. If music could be compared to sex then ‘Infinite Death’ is anal sex with a disease ridden prostitute down a stinking piss and vomit covered alleyway…without a condom. And anyone who has had the misfortune to have experienced that will know exactly where I’m coming from. Grimy sleazy music that makes you want to disinfected yourself all over after it has run its course.

This release should have gone to our resident Metal freak Lord Lycan to review. He’s well up on this scene. I, being a now deflowered virgin, know nothing of it. So trying to give comparisons to other groups is an impossible task which I will not attempt to undertake. Which is a good thing in a way. I likes what I hear and that’s all that matters. The two freak out jams created by Death Unit managed to hit all the right buttons. Glorious stuff all round and an essential purchase for the more astute noise hounds amongst you. If only it had been released thirty years ago. My incestuous voyeurism could have continued unabated.
