Genre: Neofolk
Time wounds all heels and perchance time may heal it's share of wounds.
Birch Book is a more personal project from gifted musician B'eirth also known for his more medieval inspired works as In Gowan Ring, and with this second release this new project delivers beautiful songs which are merciful towards the wandering soul. Somber yet full of wonder his skilled musicianship and vocal talent soothe the restless mind of it's feelings of rootlensness. His voice speaks with an understanding kindness offering solace for those weary of the tiresome tracks tread searchingly. There is a profound honestly and caring nature to these works that is inexpressible and which can only be heard and treasured.
Recorded on San Juan Island in the coasts of the Olympic Northwest Puget Sound these songs carry timeless themes of travel and hardships, and will find their place into the hearts of those fond of other American neofolk projects Stone Breath, Arrowwood, and Novembthree amongst others. Though comparison does not provide for justice to these works as B'eirth's homespun instrumentation is something very rare. With the exception of perchance Henry Barnes {Amps For Christ} this reviewer knows of few musicians dedicated to the craft of song working, carrying of traditional tunes, and the work of fashioning fine instruments though I would be very happy to know of more.
Listening to this album has inspired an increased interest in this projects works, and one may hope to have the opportunity to see one of Birch Book's performances whilst they may grace the Pacific Northwest as it is known that B'eirth's travels have taken him far, and shall likely continue to find him trodding paths with his unique gifts of song and instrument work.
As these words are written snow is falling and the feeling of seclusion is settling in upon myself, but the heart is thankful for the gracefulness with which Birch Book shares it's works.
