Crone of War

Artist: Omnia Netherlands

Title: Crone of War

Label: Curzweyhl Germany

Genre: Neo Cletic / Pagan Folk

Heathen Harvest had the privilege of coming upon artists Omnia during the Wave Gothic Treffen Festival in Leipzig Germany. Omnia was featured as one of the medieval acts playing at the festivals Viking Village. Upon hearing the band play live, I knew I had to hear more and promptly bought the CD. Omnia has grown from humble beginnings playing at Pagan and Historical festivals around Europe. Today the band has transformed into a tribal neo-celtic music collective worthy of playing such venues as the WGT festival.

"Crone of War" is Omnia's first full-length album produced for a wide listening audience. The album encompasses the full sound of the band and highlights their unique approach to neo-celtic music. Weaving together Celtic harp and numerous historical instruments along with various pounding drums the band produces a sound both refined and at times savage. The beating of heathen hearts can be felt in every note and rhythm.

Omnia transcend the trappings of new age Celtic music by approaching the music from a personal and quite original approach. The album is graced with intertwining songs that highlight fiery percussive songs filled with chanting and invocations and softer more insightful songs that highlight Celtic Harp. I do have to admit a partialness towards the bands more tribal and rhythmic driven side.

I highly recommend Omnia “Crone of War to Faeries with an established interest in Pagan or Celtic music. The numerous references to ancient gods found throughout the music will be a welcome companion to many Faerie witches. I was particualry fond of the title track “Morrigan” which refers to the CD’s title Crone of War. Morrigan is the ancient Celtic goddess of the battlefield. In her hands warriors die and heroes are born. Music listeners new to Celtic music or new to Pagan folk who are looking for a gentle but lively introduction should check out Omnia. Support a band that shares in our spirit!

“Over hills and over meadows
See the crow fly, feel her shadow
Over woods and over mountains
Searching for a war

Her wings embrace each strife and battle
Where swords they clash and chariots rattle
Seeking out the one whose time
Has come to take the blade”
